Lee Enterprises is donating more than $27,000 to charities from its Lee Newspapers Endowment Fund.
The Billings Gazette reports that the biggest donation, $7,500, went to the former employees of Smurfit-Stone Container, which closed this week. Most awards went to food banks or homes for abused women and children.
Yeah, and what's so tough about this is that The Gazette (my paper) has laid off plenty of people in the last two years. As have ALL of the other Lee papers in Montana. Mary J is coming to Montana next week. It'd be great to ask her about this, but she won't dare set foot in a newsroom. She's not that dumb.
ReplyDeleteSo we lay off our own people, but then donate to people laid off by OTHER companies? Huh?
ReplyDeleteLee would have served their communities much better if they spent that money on maintaining their Washington, D.C. reporter, who wrote for all five of their Montana dailies plus one in Wyoming. But, of course, such a productive reporter was the first one they axed.
