Announcements were made today at some Lee papers: No raises. No company-match to 401(k)s. Furloughs -- already being done at Gannett, MediaNews and Landmark -- are being considered.

Where are furloughs being discussed? Anybody?
Rapid City Journal. Read the story posted on the Journal's website today: The Rapid City Journal announced Thursday that it is implementing a number of cost-saving measures in light of the economic downturn and sharp decline in advertising revenue.
Merit pay increases for employees have been suspended for 2009, as has the company's contribution to employees' 401(k) funds. The paper also announced that four employees have been laid off because of budget cuts, and the Journal will be implementing a furlough program from February through April, but details have yet to be finalized.
"Like other companies, Lee Enterprises and the Rapid City Journal have had to make some difficult decisions over the past year," said Brad Slater, publisher of the Journal. "Regrettably, the economic news does not hold much hope for turning around any time soon.
FYI-- they even cut the guys who clean the toilets, janitorial service cut a couple of days each week.
Everywhere. Many properties had meetings today where the furloughs were announced. Between 3-5 days, publisher to janitors.
The F-word hasn't been mentioned to employees at the Montana properties, yet.
Correction: It is not Lee-wide.

According to the AP, the Post-Dispatch is requiring one-week furloughs of all non-union employees.

The publisher at the Longview Daily News asked employees for voluntary furloughs. If not enough employees sign up, they'll consider mandatory furloughs.
